A talk on the return of golf ’s Open Championship’s return to Hoylake takes place this Thursday (March 2).

The eyes of the world will once again fall on Hoylake the tournament returns to the town in July.

Staging the event – one of the world’s biggest annual sporting spectaculars – is described as “a project-planning masterpiece”which sees host Royal Liverpool Golf Club transformed, and Hoylake and West Kirby readied, to host tens of thousands of visitors and VIPs, for a week of practice and Championship play at the famous links course.

For the final meeting of its 2022/23 Season on Thursday, Deeside Lecture Society will have a talk from special guest Andrew Duff - assistant director of the R&A and the person responsible for transforming the course to welcome the world’s best players, patrons, guests, supporters, international media and many fans from around the world.

His lecture will give a unique insight into how the Open “happens” at Hoylake, and the logistical challenge of building the huge infrastructure required to support the event. The talk is at the United Reformed Church, Meols Drive, West Kirby, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets from deesidels.weebly.com

Coffee morning

HESWALL & District Animal Welfare Society’s coffee morning takes place this Friday from 10 to 11.30am to raise funds for its work rehoming dogs and cats.

The event is at Heswall Hall, Telegraph Road, Heswall. Admission £1. There will be a raffle, tombola and bric-a-brac stall.

'Costa Rica' talk

WIRRAL RSPB’s next indoor meeting is at the Hoylake Community Centre this Thursday at 7.30pm.

It will feature an illustrated presentation by David Tolliday dur on the country and wildlife of Costa Rica. Admission £4.

Aviation society

Chair exercise

Arabesque

THE Arabesque School of Dance is offering free trial dance classes. Sessions are at the Scout Hut on North Road in Birkenhead on Saturdays at the following times: ages 3-6 from 2-3pm; ages 7-11, from 1-2pm and 12-plus from 12- 1pm. There is an adult dancercise and tap class from 10.30-11.30am.
