CAMMELL Laird 1907 FC visited Squires Gate FC in the first round proper of the Isuzu FA Vase and were left bemoaning too many missed chances as they went out of the competition in a 2-1 defeat.

Lairds started the game on the front foot with early exchanges being fairly even, but in the 20th minute Jay Harvey delivered a superb through ball to Kieran Hamm who burst into the box only to be pushed over by trailing defender to earn a penalty which he dispatched with ease to put Lairds ahead.

The game then ebbed and flowed as both teams fought for the upper hand, but Nathan Davidson had to be alert to make a great save with his feet on the half hour mark.

As half-time approached a curling cross in the 41st minute caught out the Lairds defence and Westwood was allowed a free unmarked header at the back post to level the game before the interval.

A very even and open second period saw both teams create and miss chances, with Lairds being the biggest culprits as they squandered at least six opportunities to seal victory with one-on-one situations that were either blasted wide or over or saved by the home keeper who kept his team in the tie.

With time running out the home side gained some corners and in the 81st minute Lairds were undone as a glancing header by Bartram-Conway proved to be the winner.

This was the same player who conceded the penalty but only received a yellow card for his indiscretion that should have been a red. What a difference a decision makes?

Lairds now play a league fixture away at Abbey Hey on Tuesday (October 25) with a 7.45pm kick off and then away to Stafford Town on Saturday (October 29) with 3pm start.

They then begin a run of seven consecutive home fixtures commencing on Tuesday (November 1) at home versus Sutton Athletic in the Wirral District FA Senior Cup 1st round with a 7.30pm kick off.
