CAMMELL Laird 1907 FC progressed to the First Round of the FA Vase with a thrilling penalty shoot out victory over Retford.
Having disposed of North West Counties First Division South leaders Wythenshawe Amateurs in the previous round, Lairds set about their Nottinghamshire opponents from the start, but found the visitors hard to break down.
An exchange of passes in the 33rd minute saw Alex Wonham net for the Northern Counties East League Division One side and they held their lead until half-time.
The second period was an even affair until with only 10 minutes remaining a superb cross from substitute Regan Ruben was well met by Ben Wood to head the ball home and take the game to penalties.
Ellis Bolton fired home the first for Lairds, but Retford levelled with their opener. Ben Kerr then had his spot-kick saved before Nathan Davidson saved the visitors’ second attempt.
Gabriel Kabwalo put Lairds 2-1 ahead and then Davidson saved again, but Ruben then missed before Davidson made it a hat-trick of saves, allowing Wood to blast home the decisive spot-kick.
