CAMMELL Laird 1907 are through to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase after beating league leaders Wythenshawe Amateurs on penalties.

Kieron Frost had opened the scoring for Lairds in the 34th minute before Joel Aikenhead equalised for the hosts late in the second half.

Goalkeeper Nathan Davidson was the hero in the penalty shootout, saving two spot-kicks as the Wirral outfit went through 4-3 in front of a crowd of 160.

They will now play Retford FC at home in the next round.

Lairds were not able to follow up their triumph on Saturday with a result on Bank Holiday Monday as they lost 3-0 at Stockport Georgians in the North West Counties First Division South.

Lairds sit 17th in the table with four points.

Lairds now have two home league games in succession to get back on the winning trail as they entertain Stafford Town on Saturday, September 3 and then Cheadle Heath Nomads on Tuesday, September 6.
