VAUXHALL Motors’ season gets underway this weekend when they face Kendal Town on Saturday.

Town, who play at Parkside Road in Cumbria, were relegated from the Northern Premier League Division One West last time out as they failed to register a win in their last four games to finish 18th.

However, despite the relegation and the 9-0 friendly defeat to Carlisle United this summer there is plenty to be optimistic about for Jimmy Marshall’s side as they come into this fixture on the back of a 5-2 friendly win against Workington.

The hosts have had a promising pre-season themselves with great wins against Cammell Lairds and Widnes. However, it is the league season in which both clubs will be tested the most.

Steve Yawson netted twice in the victory against Workington, the 23-years-old former Morecambe and Prescot Cables defender being one of the visitor's ones to watch as he will look to combine his defensive abilities to his goal scoring prowess to have a successful afternoon in front of goal.

It will be interesting to see, if he does start, who wins the battle between himself and Mick McGraa’s recent debutant forward Lewis Buckley who performed well against Lairds.

It is Yawson’s teammate Darren Nightingale that is the club’s captain, the Chairman of Town being Michael O’Neill.

Kendal was founded in 1919, originally being named Netherfield due to originating from workers from the Netherfield Somerfield Brothers Factory and the name was changed to its present name in 2000. Their greatest success being two Lancashire Combination wins, in 1949 and 1965.

Following the game against Motors, Kendal will go on to face Thornaby in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round on August 6 as they look to go on a good cup run. Vauxhall Motors’ will also be in FA Cup action on August 6 against Whitchurch Alport, but a tough test stands in the way too on Thursday, August 4 away to Lower Breck.
