TRANMERE Rovers have announced the signing of Joel Mumbongo on a one year contract!

The striker has appeared for Rovers during two of the club's pre season games and netted an impressive goal against Southport in a 4-1 win.

He began his career in his native country of Sweden at BK Hacken before scoring seven goals in 15 games for Utsiktens BK and moving to Hellas Verona in Italy whilst also appearing internationally for Sweden U19s.

In 2019, then Premier League side Burnley invited Mumbongo for a trial in which he impressed and earned a contract with The Clarets. The forward earned himself Premier League 2 Player of the Month after a string of quality performances and goals before being called up to the first team.

The 23-year-old appeared four times in the Premier League and three times in the FA Cup that season. Accrington Stanley swooped to sign him on loan last season where he scored twice in ten games in League One.

Mumbongo pens a contract which will keep him at Prenton Park until at least the summer of 2023.

After agreeing the deal, he said: “I’m really happy to be here. I’ve felt very welcome since I’ve been here and I like the style of play that we want to play next season.

“I feel like this is the right place for me to develop and kick on. I’m a physical striker, I like to get in behind and do what I know I’m good at.

“I think the style of play will fit me very well so I just can’t wait to get out on the pitch and do what I do.”

Manager Micky Mellon added: “We’re really pleased to add Joel into the group. We’ve said that we would like to add not just more bodies but more quality and feel like Joel adds that.

“He’s been with us for a couple of weeks now so we can see his qualities and what he can bring which is different to what we already have because that’s important.

“We’re really looking forward to working with Joel this season, helping him to continue developing and moving us forward.”
