A WIRRAL cricketer has hit the headlines after an astonishing debut match for Lancashire earlier this week.

Sophie Morris, 18, claimed the remarkable figures of 6-0 from 2.2 overs on her Academy debut against Lightning at Sale on Tuesday.

The left-arm spinner has joined the Thunder’s Academy intake for 2022, and could not have made a better start with five of her wickets bowled and the other lbw as Lightning were bowled out for just 60 in a 14-over game.

Morris is a product of the junior system at Upton, who play in the Cheshire County League where she has already been involved in the senior squad playing 1st XI and 2nd XI for the last couple of years.

Thunder head coach Paul Shaw hailed the exploits of the six-wicket Academy star following her memorable debut

Morris is a product of Birkenhead club Upton, who play in the Cheshire County League.

Shaw said: “Six wickets for no runs, it’s almost unheard of isn’t it. I wouldn’t want to say never again because you just never know do you.

“Sophie bowled really, really well and is a great kid who is really eager to learn.

“Sophie puts a little bit on the ball, but she just bowls really accurate lines. There wasn’t massive deviation, but it was just line and length.”

A spokesperson for Upton said: "We all know from playing with and watching Sophie last year that this is thoroughly deserved and we could not be happier to hear the wonderful news.

"The Thunder Academy, has brought through and produced not just Lancashire Women's cricketers but also England cricketers so this is no doubt a huge opportunity for Sophie.

"It really does show that hard work pays off, and we know as a club that this will undoubtedly just be the first stepping stone for Sophie on her long cricketing journey.

"Her performances in the Women's XI, 1st XI and 2nd XI last season prove that she has what it takes, coupled with her incredible drive and determination."
