Wirral Athletics Club are celebrating yet again, after another weekend of success confirmed the team’s current position as a leading force in the region for running.

More than 100 athletes from the club took to the roads of Warrington on Saturday, competing against over 50 other clubs and 1,500 runners in the North West Road Relays.

At the end of a long day of racing, it was Wirral who prevailed at the top of the medal table for the first time in its history, taking two Golds, four Silvers and one Bronze across the 10 age groups.

But there was more to come the following day.

The junior fell team had to get up early and make their way to Ilam in Derbyshire for one of the toughest fell races going - a category A on Bunster Ridge in the White Peak. This was the fourth race in the English Championship Series, and going into the race Wirral had runners hopeful of podium positions, with the club stood in fourth place overall.

No Merseyside club had ever taken a club trophy in the English Fell series, but in 2021 the phenomenal Wirral endurance program has written another piece of history.

Led by Josh Hatton (overall Bronze at U13), Meg Hoshiko (overall Silver at U15), and Alex Poulston (overall Bronze at U17), the club’s runners packed tightly in top 20 positions across several races, and Wirral AC finished the series in overall 2nd, taking a Fell trophy for the first time in Merseyside history.

The Bebington-based club’s successes come hot on the heels of strong representation at the UK School Games in Loughborough.

Will Strickley and TJ Jones did well over 1500m and 3000m respectively, both finishing sixth, and Kresten Calvert had bravely battled injury to win Bronze in the High Jump.

But Keira Brady Jones showed why she is the most feared runner in the country over 1500m. She was unchallenged in the School Games final, taking Gold to add to her English Schools and English National titles. Wirral AC can also boast finishing top of the Merseyside Track & Field league, having won every match this season.
