Wirral Athletics Club provided the entire Merseyside junior squad for the U15 and U17 in the Inter-Country Fell Championships on Sunday, June 13.

This was the first time that one club had provided 100 per cent of the athletes for a Merseyside team in any inter-country championships in any discipline.

This year, under the guidance of experienced fell coach Nigel Crompton, the Wirral Endurance Program (WEP) has been training for months on Heswall Dales and Moel Famau and provided the entire Merseyside junior squad for the championships.

The endurance program has 20 coaches and assistant coaches meaning there is a wide range of expertise within the team.

Ronan Kearney said: “It paid off for our squads who gave traditional mountain running counties such as Yorkshire and Derbyshire a bit of a shock on a very tough course in the Peak District.

“I am so proud of our young athletes who work so hard and kept themselves motivated throughout lockdown.

“The endurance program is going from strength to strength and looking forward to seeing our first ever Olympic triallist race on Sunday, June 27

“New runners are always welcome to join the program that is now over 100 strong.”

The U15 Girls secured the first team medals in the history of Merseyside by taking Bronze followed by the U17 Boys who came in fourth.

The endurance program also sent six athletes to the Northern T&F U20 Championships held at Leigh across the weekend of Saturday, June 12 Saturday and Sunday, June 13.

The program was rewarded with six finalists, who between them won three Golds and one Silver.

Wirral AC also competed in the first round of both the Upper and Lower Youth Leagues in athletics, and won both rounds beating all the local clubs from Merseyside, North Wales and Cheshire.
