Cammell Laird 1907 FC kicked off their season with a 3-0 success over a very good Abbey Hulton United team amid difficult conditions in the North West Counties League First Division South.
The opening exchanges were rather even until a superb 14th minute Jake Hulley cross was met by Captain Colm Lynch with a great header to open the scoring.
The game continued in the same vain until just before half time when Rio Merrifield dribbled clear of a number of challenges to deliver yet another great cross and Colm Lynch netted his second goal with another fine finish for a 2-0 half time lead.
The second half overall was fairly even, but in the opening minutes Paul Bathgate volleyed home a superb goal from within his own half after the Abbey goalie punted clear from his area and watched helplessly as the ball sailed into the net.
This was a great start for Lairds and they can now look forward to their FA Vase fixture versus Maltby Main on Saturday, October 10, with a 3pm kick off.
