The Wirral AC endurance program had to wheel out its biggest guns to edge its third national victory of the lockdown period.

After winning both the Roger Bannister mile team competition, followed by the British Miler’s Club 1k challenge, the young squad had to up its game to take on over 195 senior squads across the country in a 3000m team race.

Wirral were led in by TJ Jones, who delivered the run of his life in a new personal best of 8mins 22seconds and he was ably supported by the likes of England International star Sophie Tarver, and Welsh International Sarah Kearney, who is also the lead coach of the Wirral endurance program.

Mark Smith, Coach in the Wirral Endurance Program said: “The squad just keeps getting better and better and it’s been exciting to see some new young runners joining the program.

"We also keep getting reports from our young runners that people congratulate them when they see them out and about after reading about them in the Globe.

“I love that the community is taking pride in this fantastic team”

Wirral completed eight full teams in the event - far more than any other club in the country - and finished with their top three squads taking 1st, 3rd and 8th out of 195 teams.

As a result of the success the squad has been having, the coaching team have been shortlisted for their work as one of the best lockdown programs in the North West of England by England Athletics – results are expected in early July.
