Tranmere have made their first move in the January transfer window, signing experienced centre-back Peter Clarke from Fleetwood Town.

The 37-year-old has made 17 appearances for the Cod Army this season and is available to play in Rovers’ FA Cup Third Round clash against Premier League Watford on Saturday at Vicarage Road.

Micky Mellon will be hoping that Southport-born Clarke can shore up a leaky defence that saw the Whites drop into the relegation zone on New Year’s Day following the 4-1 home defeat to Coventry City.

Mellon told the club’s website: “We’re really pleased to bring Peter to the Club. We needed to add experience to the defence. He’s an organiser and a leader and he has great ability too. More than anything, he’s a winner and a top professional.

“We need to concede less and keep more clean sheets which we believe he can help us do with his experience. I’m delighted to have him on board.”

Clarke started his career at Everton and captain Huddersfield Town to promotion from League One in 2012. He has also turned out for Blackpool, Oldham Athletic and Southend United.

Clarke said: "I'm really happy and I'm looking forward to getting started. I'm honest, hardworking, I wear my heart on my sleeve and I will leave everything out there on the pitch.
"I spoke to the manager and we had a long chat about what he wants at the Club and what is already in place. It’s now time that we progress and move forward."
