Birkenhead Park 33, Anselmians 0

BIRKENHEAD Park finished the North1 West season with victory in the Wirral derby at the Upper Park to secure third place in the table.

Park had first use of the elements with the stormy conditions making handling difficult throughout.

Hooker Stu Brown was first to score after 10 minutes following a forward surge and then second row Josh Smith crossed in similar fashion.

Park, generally, had the upper hand in the forward battle but needed to build a lead up before turning round to play into the gale in the second half.

Skipper Jack Ashcroft duly obliged with the third try following another forward drive and Dave Hall converted all three home scores.

Centre Carl Southan claimed the bonus point try from broken play as Park led 26-0 at the break.

Anselmians put up a good show in the second half and they were unlucky to have an Andy Cummings try disallowed for a forward pass.

Defences dominated and the only score of the half came from prop Liam Sharples converted by Dave Hall.

Park director of rugby, Martin O'Keefe, said: " Overall to finish third is a good effort and we beat all the teams in the league apart from winners Carlisle at least once. We lacked consistency at times and that is why we aren't in the promotion mix."

The Park Wanderers side are hoping to make it a cup and league double when they take on Sandbach at Old Bedians in the Halbro Cup Final on Saturday.

Park are hosting the Cheshire v Durham match in the County Championship on May 18.
