AN excellent First division Cup Final took place at Cammell Laird 1907 and saw JASGA PV put in a superb team performance to beat in-form Poulton Vics 4-2.

An early Mike New penalty and a Ben Speed effort opened the scoring.

Karl Barker reduced the arrears before Stewart Speed made it 3-1 at the break.

Darren Pritchard increased the lead in the second period but a late penalty from captain Craig Kaye ended the scoring.

Man-of-the-match awards went to Steve Bridge (Vics) and Gary Baker as both teams made this a memorable final, but Vics have two more finals to rectify the honours table.

Nelson FC reclaimed top spot in the First division when beating PLCCFC in a very even affair 2-1, thanks to Ben Dunn netting a fine double, with Anton Jolley firing the lone response.

In the Second division leaders Halfway House opened up an eleven-point lead at the top as they overcame North Wirral Saints with a 5-0 success in which Filippo Iulianella bagged a fine brace, with Joe Cooper, Alex Ramsay and Kal Herbert all netting singles in their search for the title.

This result was allied to their mid-week 4-2 victory over Barnston PV.

Despite a Stephen Teale equaliser before half-time for Trident they went down 3-1 versus Runcorn Select, which has dented their hopes of a top two finish.

Only one game in the Grove Youth division saw cup finalists Groves Rovers lose an even fought encounter 1-0 against title chasers ACA Sports who yet again had Simon Grace as their match winner.

Sad to report, yet again, that the failure of referees to attend fixtures caused the loss of four games in the league and this situation is becoming more prevalent throughout the district and all leagues and needs to be addressed by the parent county FA before it causes the downfall of teams and leagues in the world of grassroots football.

Applications for new teams are now being accepted by the league and it is hoped that teams from the youth section will consider moving up into the open age divisions. It is also hoped that teams from the junior leagues will also be applying for membership of the youth section of the league.
