IT was a breezy day in Birkenhead Park on Sunday but yet again, despite the heavy overnight rain, the greens were in excellent condition.

This week the tournament was won by Hawksbury's Paul Roberts who made it a worthwhile trip over from North Wales by beating New Brighton Quarry Viking's Joe Edwards in the final.

Roberts had a comfortable win in the quarter final when he beat Dougie Briscoe but his semi final victory over last week's winner of the tournament, Tixall's Mick Andrews, could not have been any closer.

Roberts scraped through with a 21-20 victory.

To reach the final Edwards came through with two fairly straightforward wins over Hawksbury's John Jones and then Vic Alcock of Ledsham Royal.

Roberts continued his fine form in the final and he had a 21-13 win over Edwards to take the top prize..

Results:

Quarter Finals; V. Alcock 21, R. Fitzpatrick 20; J. Edwards 21, J. Jones 18; M. Andrews 21, A. Buchanan 15; P. Roberts 21, D. Briscoe 08.

Semi Finals: Edwards 21, Alcock 17; Roberts 21, Andrews 20.

Final: Roberts 21, Edwards 13.

As a result of reaching the final Joe Edwards further increased his lead at the top of the points table.

Entries are now being accepted for this year's Carlsberg Tixall Classic which is, as normal, being held on the green at Tixalls' on the Spring Bank Holiday, Monday May 27.
