Plymouth 24-14 Caldy

CALDY missed a penalty in the final few seconds of the game to take a losing bonus point away from their long trip to Plymouth at the weekend.

It was the home side who dominated the game in terms of territory and possession however it was the Caldy defence that kept the score line looking respectable.

The home side took the lead in the first three minutes when Powell crossed and the conversion was missed in a blustery afternoon on the Devon Coast.

Due to the conditions and the resolute Caldy defence it was another half hour before the scoreboard was troubled again, this time it was Davis who crossed to double the home side's lead.

Caldy hit back immediately after two Plymouth players failed to catch the restart.

The ball got to Nick Royle, the league’s top try scorer, who raced onto his own kick to score in the corner for his ninth try of the season, and with Jones converting with ease it allowed the Wirral side to go in at half time just three points down.

The second half was very competitive with the home side scoring two trys within the first quarter hour, to claim the winning bonus point, the second taking advantage of Caldy being reduced to 14 men after flanker Harrison Crowe was yellow carded.

However in a repeat of the first half the lead was reduced almost immediately when Royle raced in for his second try of the afternoon making for a tense final quarter of the game.

The tension overspilled as a maul on the half way line resulted in Caldy hooker Ted Stagg and Albion winger Jack Arnott were sent to the cooler.

The game went on with both sides looking for victory but no further points were scored.

Caldy will be putting their unbeaten home record on the line this Saturday against Ampthill and District at Paton Field. Kick off at 3pm.
