FOR Tixall's Anthony O'Neill it was business as usual in the Top Sixteen Tournament of this session of the Bowls Winter Flyers.

In a repeat of last week's final he beat New Brighton Quarry Vikings John Cosgrove to take his sixth win of the series.

O'Neill beat St George's Derek Smith before he proved a little too good for Heswall's Ritchie Jamieson in the quarter finals.

His next opponent, New Brighton Quarry Viking's Eddie Dutton, started well but O'Neill eventually raised his game and ran out a fairly comfortable winner.

Cosgrove's first two games against Quarry Viking's Owen Turner and St George's John Joy were both very close but he came through each of them to face Gladstone's Joe Edwards in the semi final.

This game was closer than the scoreline suggested but Cosgrove got through to face O'Neill in a repeat of the previous week's final.

This was a great game and either player could have won but Cosgrove faltered at the end and allowed O'Neill to, yet again, take the first prize.

Quarter finals: A. O'Neill (Tixall) 21, R. Jamieson (Heswall RBL) 16; E. Dutton (New Brighton Quarry Vikings) 21, W. Atkinson (West Kirby Park) 17; J. Edwards (Gladstone) 21, N. Turner (New Brighton Quarry Vikings) 20; J. Cosgrove (New Brighton Quarry Vikings) 21, J. Joy (St. Georges) 20.

Semi Finals: O'Neill 21, Dutton 13; Cosgrove 21, Edwards 12. Final: O'Neill 21, Cosgrove 19.

Because one of the sessions had to be cancelled due to bad weather there will be another tournament this Sunday (April 8).

The Crown Green Bowling coaching sessions are restarting this Saturday (April 7) from 10am to midday.

Because the Cammell Lairds green has closed these will now be taking place in Birkenhead Park on green five.

There will be coaching sessions for junior players and also coaching for any senior players who want to pick up some pointers to improve their game.

Total beginners who want to take up this great game are also very welcome.

Last week saw the start of the summer season as the Birkenhead and Wirral Afternoon League got under way with the first round of games.
