Wirral 21, Lymm 30

THE toll of injuries to key players caught up on Wirral as they lost their second consecutive home game to Cheshire neighbours Lymm.

Wirral started the game in dramatic fashion as from their first play in possession, the ball went down the backs and Ali Baker was on hand to score in the corner with James Annetts converting from the touchline.

Problems of previous games began to show as too many passes were being dropped, passes were being forced and not controlling the ball, as progress up the field through the forwards would have brought greater success.

Lymm worked their way into the game aided by some controversial refereeing decisions.

A penalty followed by an outside break by the Lymm centre, Richard McEvoy saw them take a 7-10 lead and a further penalty saw Lymm ex- tend their lead to 7-13 by half-time.

The away side extended its lead early in the second half when wing- er, Rhys Jones touched down in the corner.

One minute later Wirral were in the lead 21-18, when Mark Williams broke through a number of tackles before passing to James Annetts who had to fend off would-be tacklers before running in from 25m to score and then convert his own try.

With 15 minutes to go Wirral ex- erted pressure on the Lymm line, scrums were collapsed, players tackled in the air yet the referee took no action.

With the aid of a line out that travelled two metres, Lymm were able to clear the ball wide which gave them the overlap as they went down the field to score the try bonus point and secure vic- tory in the final minutes.

With no matches next week, Wirral will be looking for some injured players to return to first team action in a fortnight’s time.
