LAST week saw the first games in the latest division to be offered by Chester & Wirral Football league – the Monday Night-11s.

This division now sees the CWFL operating at 73 teams, a massive in- crease of 29 teams from the end of the 2015-2016 season.

The night games were played between Groves Athletic and Wirral United, finishing 3-3 with the night's other game between Sykrop and ESWA finishing 4-1 to ESWA.

League secretary Paul Graham said: "The expansion of the CWFL is owing to our willingness to look at other forms of 11-vs-11 football that were not readily available in the area.

"Our Monday and Friday Night Flexi Divisions are attracting players new and old who cannot commit to the more traditional forms of the game on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings through work or family commitments.

"The games are played on central locations on 3G surfaces and are guaranteed to be on.

"We are delighted with the way this format has taken on and hope to expand even further once facilities become available."

In an end-to-end second half Town were awarded a penalty which was saved by the out-stretched hand of keeper Ollie Jones.

With only five minutes remaining Port managed to get the decisive third goal thanks to Steve Dutton side stepping challenges and scoring from just inside the box into the top left hand corner of the net.

Newton Athletic returned to winning ways and remain second in the table, beating Kelsall 7-2 thanks to goals from Ben Woodman (4), Marc Moorefield, Mark Richards and an own-goal.

AFC ESSAR are maintaining their grip on pole position of the CWFL Olympic Trophies Division One.

Goals from Josh Forster (3), Simon Whelan, Richard Keane and Adam Shorton gave them a 6-4 win over fifth-placed New Ferry Rangers who had Chris Carress, Scott Froggartt, Connah Bagley and Lee Doyle on the score sheet.

Adi Gough now sits on 499 career goals for Cestrian Alex after scoring twice helping them beat Ashton Athletic 5-1.
