THE finalists from last week's Flyers Tournament - Tixall's Matthew Gilmore and West Kirby's Bill Atkinson - faced each other again in the second-round of this week's tournament on Sunday.

This time it was your correspondent Atkinson who won through in another very close game.

This success against the winner of the previous two weeks obviously inspired the West Kirby player as he went on to win his subsequent matches to take the top prize beating New Brighton Queens Royal's Eddie Dutton in the final.

In the quarter-final, Atkinson got the better of Lever's Steve Gardner, who had done well on his first visit to Birkenhead Park for some time, and he then reached the final with a fairly comfortable win in the semi-final over Colin Portis who will also be playing for Levers this coming season.

In the other half of the draw Dutton was in imperious form in his quarter final match as he swept to victory over Abergele's Roger Griffiths and then in the semi final he had another excellent win over the most consistently successful player at these events, Tixall's Mick Andrews

Dutton seemed to find it difficult to reproduce his earlier form in the final and Atkinson slowly edged ahead to take a 21-10 victory.

Results: Quarter-finals: E Dutton (New Brighton Queens Royal) 21, R Griffiths (Abergele) 06; M Andrews (Tixall) 21, T Walker (Hoylake Central) 13; C Portis (Levers) 21, J Harrison (New Brighton Quarry Vikings) 18; W Atkinson (West Kirby) 21, S Gardner (Levers) 12.

Semi-finals: Dutton 21, Andrews 14; Atkinson 21, Portis 10. Final: Atkinson 21, Dutton 10.

Though Mick Andrews has yet to win one of this session's tournaments his consistent high placing has taken him to the top of the points table; Bill Atkinson is now in second place.

The top 16 in the table will compete in the final flyers tournament of this winter on Sunday, April 6.
