Students at Birkenhead School were celebrating after picking up their A Level results last Thursday and now continue their educational journey at leading universities and apprenticeships across the UK and beyond.

Headmaster, Paul Vicars, comments: "This year’s A Level results mark a celebration of the resilience and academic courage shown by the cohort perhaps most affected by the pandemic. Without the opportunity to prove themselves within the GCSE examination room two years ago, we couldn’t be prouder of the remarkable journey this year’s Upper Sixth have travelled, and the exciting futures that now lie ahead of them.

"It has been a privilege for all staff to assist these students in overcoming the many challenges they have faced, and we look upon their results, alongside their wide-ranging sporting, musical and creative contributions to the School’s community along the way, with great pride."

Wirral Globe:

Out of this year’s cohort of forty-seven students, over a quarter achieved all A grades and above in their exams. Three students achieved all A* grades. Two of these head to Oxford University to read Mathematics and Medicine respectively, the third to read Medicine at Leicester University. 21% of all grades were awarded the top A* grade, with 74% of all grades awarded being A*-B.

A special feature of Birkenhead School is the diversity of routes that the students choose post-A Level, reflecting the bespoke guidance provided during the Sixth Form years by the Futures Team – not least, that students should follow what they are passionate about.

Students now leave to enjoy a sports scholarship in the US, class-leading apprenticeships and a diverse range of degree courses that range from Law, and Economics & Statistics, to Modern Languages and Fine Art at universities across the UK, ranging from Bath to UCL and up to Edinburgh.

Apprenticeships gained this year include with Airbus and the world-renowned Dyson Institute. These add to the growing list of impressive apprenticeship destinations achieved in recent years including Microsoft, PWC, the BBC, Amazon, Redrow, and, more locally, Auger.

It is with some excitement that these students now move on to the next chapter in their educational lives, joining the extensive global network of Old Birkonians, and armed with a remarkable resilience that will see them thrive in the years ahead.

This year also marks the special moment when a number of our students complete their journey through the whole School - Early Years, Prep and now Seniors - having been part of the early cohorts when the School’s Nursery opened in January 2006. This long-term commitment, by so many families, is a particular feature of the School, with entry encouraged into the Prep in Year 3 in order for staff to add the greatest value, but with other standard entry points into Seniors in Year 7 and into Sixth Form. Extensive means-tested bursaries are available.

Wirral Globe:

The School prides itself on its values and its sense of community, and views commitment to sport, music, drama and a variety of clubs and activities as integral to the development of each individual student.

For those wishing to find out more about a Birkenhead School education, information can be found on the School’s website, where families can also sign up to attend one of the School’s Michaelmas Term Open Events – Seniors (Year 7 to Sixth Form) Thursday 5th October from 6.00pm; Prep (Primary ages) Friday 17th November from 9.15am.

Early enquiry and application is encouraged as the School has operated waiting lists in recent years.
