UNSIGNED Wirral musicians are invited to compete for the chance to be the first act to perform at this year's Chester Rocks Festival.

The two-day festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, June 16/17 at Chester Racecourse.

It will feature artists such as The Courteeners, Pixie Lott, Katy B, Cast and Tinchy Stryder.

Organisers of the event have announced a competition that will see one local act secure the first set on the main stage to open this year's festival.

Co-ordinator Anthony Probyn said: "Unsigned artists are always keen to be involved with local events and as a result we are pleased to offer the opportunity for a deserving band to play the main stage opening slot at Chester Rocks 2012.

"The selection panel all work for established radio, retail or live music providers in Chester and the inclusion of a live final in the City's premier music venue helps to ensure that the best act will win".

Unsigned acts are invited to submit entries in CD format to Telfords Warehouse or Dawsons in Chester from now until Friday, April 13.

Once all have been received a judging panel made-up of Gavin Matthews from Dee 106.3FM, Sam Salisbury (Dawsons / Farida Guitars) and Mike Devoy (Telfords Warehouse) will shortlist five finalists who will be asked to perform in a final at Telfords Warehouse on Thursday May 31.

The winning band will be selected on the night and rewarded with the opening slot at this year's festival.

The successful act will follow in the footsteps of local bands The Fallows, The Suns and Indigo City who will also be performing at this year's event.

Lead singer from The Suns, Jono said: "We are really excited to be involved with this year's event and are looking forward to seeing who will be joining us on the main stage."
