Thousands of runners took to the streets of Wirral today as they tackled the first eleven miles of the Run Liverpool Marathon.
The gruelling twenty-six mile race, which began in Birkenhead Park, saw over 10,000 athletes treading the tarmac of Wallasey through towards New Brighton on the first leg of the event.
Crowds of people lined the streets to cheer on the competitors who headed back along Egremont Promenade to Hamilton Square and through the Queensway tunnel to the remainder of the course in Liverpool.
Coinciding with the birthday of John Lennon, it has been nearly twenty years since the last Mersey Marathon, which took place in 1992.
Joining the many local participants were runners from across the country and as far afield as America, Australia, Dubai and Hong Kong.
