GUESTS at a Wirral hotel were evacuated after a blaze started in a bedroom.

Firefighters were called to the Dunsandles Hotel, Rowson Street, New Brighton at around 2.15am yesterday.

The Victorian hotel's owner, Alan Johnson, said all guests were evacuated from the building and it was now back to business as usual.

He said: "We believe the small fire was a result of a guest smoking in his bedroom but our systems worked well and all guests were led to safety.

"The fire brigade were very prompt and we are now open as normal."

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed fire crews from Wallasey and Birkenhead dealt with the fire and that an investigation into its cause had been launched.

A 38-year-old man was also taken to Arrowe Park Hospital as a precaution to be treated for burns to his hand.
