The opening of Cathcart Street Primary School will be delayed until to allow for refurbishment works to be finished.
The school, based at Dover Close, Birkenhead, had intended to open to the 140 pupils for the autumn term on Wednesday next week.
Many pupils from Cole Street Primary School - which was controversially closed down by the council in August - have transferred to Cathcart Street and were due to be in their new classrooms next week.
The council says the decision to delay the opening was taken in consultation with the local authority and the governors, "to ensure that the buildings and classrooms were fully functional and met with health and safety requirements."
Parents have been sent individual letters explaining the situation.
The school office can be contacted on 0151 647 7349 from September 6 if anyone has any inquiries.
