PRINCE Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, will be a Guest of Honour at West Kirby Sailing Club at the end of May.

The club is hosting the International One Metre Class World Championship from May 28 to June 4 with daily racing on the Marine Lake.

Prince Phillip, a keen supporter of model yachting, will be in attendance on Tuesday May 31. He has been a Patron of the MYA since 1952.

"To have our Patron visit us during the week of racing is a great honour and makes the event extra special", said Peter Stollery, the Chairman of the Model Yachting Association.

West Kirby Commodore Chris Riley said: "We were thrilled to be invited to host the 2011 IOM World Championship and it is a great honour to welcome HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, as Patron of the MYA, to the club".

Prince Phillip will be able to view the competition from West Kirby Promenade and could even take to the water.

The Championship will be contested by 76 of the world's best radio sailing skippers with twenty countries represented.

The opening ceremony will be on May 28 followed by six days of racing. The closing ceremony will be on June 4 when the new World Champion will be crowned.
