POLICE have confirmed that a 19-year-old man has been arrested following a robbery in Birkenhead early this morning.

At around 3.30am, police on patrol were flagged down by a passing taxi driver who had witnessed an incident taking place in Hinson Street in Birkenhead.

The offender ran off towards Hamilton Square and a few moments later was stopped by officers on patrol in the area and arrested on suspicion of assault and robbery.

The phone was recovered in nearby Argyle Street and the victim was taken to hospital by paramedics for treatment to facial injuries.

One lane of Hinson Street, at its junction of Argyle Street, is currently closed while a forensic examination is carried out.
