WIRRAL played its part in this year's Grand National by nursing back to fitness Pond House, a horse injured while running in the gruelling four-and-a-half mile marathon.

The heavy ground this year meant that only six horses completed the course and Pond House strained ligaments and was pulled up.

But the staff at Leahurst Large Animal Hospital, Neston, sprung into action and saved nine-year-old Pond House, who has won two races this season.

Said Professor Barrie Edwards: "The hospital acts as the emergency centre for five racecourses in the North West. Pond House was brought here after the race with strained ligaments. We've treated him well but he has been retired from racing."
