TRANMERE Rovers' former assistant manager, Ray Mathias, has been sacked as manager of Second Division Wigan Athletic - after guiding them to a Wembley victory and into the Play-Offs!

Mathias, who still lives in Bebington, had only been in the job for one season on a non-contract basis. His dismissal follows Wigan's failure, at Manchester City last Wednesday, to reach the Division Two Play-Off Final.

Only three weeks ago, he guided Wigan to glory in the Autowindscreens Shield Final at Wembley.

He told Globe Sport: "I am absolutely devastated - I and my family are in total shock. I've had some nice messages from Tranmere and Wigan fans, who have been absolutely fantastic and I'd like to thank them because it means a lot."
