From Francis W. Johnson:-
I AM lead to believe that the original toll system for The Queensway Tunnel was raised to pay for its construction (it opened in 1934), and was to stop in 1984.
It was then discovered that if another tunnel was constructed that could be classed as an improvement on the first tunnel. Therefore, tolls could be charged on both tunnels for another 50 years!
If this is true, I wonder how many tunnels can be dug, as an infinitum of nice little earners before the Tunnel Joint Committees hit the Runcorn boundary? Just a thought from one who no longer has to use the Mersey 'mouse holes'!
