AS we head for the Millennium, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is urging people in Wirral to make the most of the Millennium Gift Aid Scheme.

Making a minimum donation of £100 through Gift Aid will ensure your chosen charity benefits from tax relief.

The Millennium Gift Aid Scheme has over 300 participating charities, covering 80 of the world's poorest countries. The most recent extension of the scheme now includes organisations working to relieve the plight of Kosovan refugees. The Chancellor announced the scheme in the 1998 Budget to advance education and relieve poverty in developing countries.

Chas Roy-Chowdhury, Secretary to ACCA's Taxation Committee, said: "By donating a minimum of £100, your chosen charity is able to reclaim basic rate tax from the Inland Revenue, almost £30 per £100. It is an opportunity for individuals to give a tax-free charitable donation for the new Millennium."

Donations can only be made by individuals, rather than companies, trustees or with the proceeds of a collection. Donations can be made in monthly instalments or in a lump sum, as long as they are made before December 31, 2000.
