From Jeremy Benton:-

I AM surprised to see that the local council have allowed the erection of cell towers within urban areas of Wirral. Most people do not know what they are, so have no concern about their presence in the vicinity. The cell tower is a powerful microwave broadcast station, with an output of around 1000 watt emitting the frequency of a cellular phone.

The cellular phone is suspected of causing damage to the brain when used over a long period. Manufacturers know this and are making screens to protect the user. Young children are particularly sensitive to exposure to the radiation from cellular phones (BBC Panorama, May 24th, 1999).

According to a report from the New York State Attorney General's office, "electromagnetic fields (EMFs) may contribute to cancer by altering the function of the immune system.

Controversial studies indicate rates of childhood leukaemia appear to be higher near transmission stations.

Two cell towers on Wirral that I have particularly noticed are one sited overlooking the children's playground at Meols - where children play only a few yards away from the transmitting elements above - and at West Kirby Station, where people work in the shops close by.

Many cities in America have prohibited cell towers within the limits of the town. I feel that more understanding of the dangers involved should have been known to Wirral Council before erection of these cell towers was allowed.
