TOYOTA'S acclaimed new city car, the Yaris, has been narrowly pipped at the post in CAP's Top 40 Value for Money chart.
Returning to the number one slot is the formerly top placed Perodua Nippa, which squeezes past the Yaris by just 0.1 pence per mile.
The CAP Top 40 is compiled from figures in CAP Monitor, the industry standard guide to ownership costs and future used values for more than 3,000 vehicles.
The all-important pence-per-mile figure reflects the true cost of car ownership over three years/60,000 miles, including fuel, servicing and value depreciation.
Costing 13.5 pence per mile to run, the Nippa topped the Top 40 on its launch in 1998 and has enjoyed an almost continuous reign at the top ever since. Elsewhere in the top 40 there is a trend towards small automatics and six places were taken by Daihatsu.
