FRIGATE HMS COVENTRY is among ten warships of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic Group on a goodwill visit to Merseyside.

They docked on the Liverpool side yesterday. Visitors will be able to see the ships on Sunday, September 12, between 1 pm and 5 pm before they sail. HMS Coventry carries the name of the Birkenhead-built destroyer sunk in the Falklands War. The new vessel has Merseyside crew aboard.

VAUXHALL Motors and campaigners could come face to face over plans to demolish old Listed aircraft hangars near the Ellesmere Port factory at Hooton.

The Save Hooton Hangars Campaign was highlighted in last week's Globe at the start of Battle of Britain Week. Ellesmere Port and Neston Council's planning committee was meeting last night to consider negotiations between the two opposing sides. Vauxhall says it needs the land for for a new distribution centre. Among those objecting is 610 Chester Squadron Group, which was based at Hooton Park and fought in the Battle of Britain. Former aces from this squadron joined Wirral Aviation Society for the annual Battle of Britain memorial lecture at the Roundel Club, Oxton, on Sunday. They expressed their support for the SHH campaign.

THE restaurant at Thornton Hall Hotel and Country Health Club has again been awarded two Red Rosettes for the quality of its cuisine by the AA. A commemorative plate will be presented to general manager Colin Fraser at the Olympia Restaurant Show in October.

EMMANUEL Church is disappearing . . . the red brick church in Seabank Road, Wallasey, is being demolished. Emmanuel is now linked to the parish church of St James and a smaller church building will be sited in Seabank Road after demolition.

ST Saviour's Church has put in plans for residential flats on the site of the parish hall in Storeton Road, Oxton, which are expected to be refused at Thursday's meeting of Wirral planning committee.

A 233-household petition has been received objecting to re-roofing of a tower and main room at 32 Christchurch Road, Oxton. Oxton Society also thinks the work will 'vandalise the existing structure', a Grade II Listed building.

THE Wallasey Centre of the British Red Cross is hosting an afternoon tea at their Training Centre, 97 Wallasey Road, Liscard, on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm, when the prize-winning tickets in a huge fund-raising raffle will be drawn.

All this is to raise urgent funds for the Turkish Earthquake Appeal to help over 200,000 homeless survivors. Help is needed to bring urgent medical aid, food, clean water, shelter, hope and care to people in crisis who need support.

POLICE are investigating a suspected arson at Grove Street Primary School, New Ferry, just after the start of the new school term.

The blaze started on Sunday afternoon and took fire fighters about 20 minutes to bring under control.

A POLISH sailor had to be hospitalised after he was trapped between his ship and the dock wall at Bromborough docks on Thursday. The 35-year-old man was pulled back on board his ship and is being treated in hospital for severe spinal injuries.
