MR Brian Copeland in his letter to the Globe on December 20 expressed dismay that the new ferry terminal for Birkenhead "does not seem to provide any involvement with the railway."
I am happy to inform Mr Copeland that for the past year or so the council has been actively engaged in consultations regarding reinstatement to operational use of the disused rail freight link from Rock Ferry North junction, through the docks system via Canning Street, Duke Street and Wallasey Bridge Road to Bidston junction. The preferred option is to open up the whole of the line to through running, utilising the Merseyrail Rock Ferry to Chester/Ellesmere Port line to the east and the Bidston/Wrexham line to the west.
The main partners in this project are Wirral Borough Council, Railtrack, Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, and English and Welsh and Scottish Railway. A feasibility study is currently being finalised and the next stage will involve detailed design and assembling a funding package. It is hoped that the reinstatement will be carried out in time for the line to become operational in Spring 2002.
Cllr Phil Davies,
Economic Regeneration Committee,
Wirral Borough Council.
