CHARITABLE bikers gathered on Sunday to deliver Easter treats to needy children... and may have broken a British record along the way.

Wirral's 21st annual 'Egg Run' saw an estimated 16,000 motor cyclists take to the road with chocolate eggs and donations in hand.

This could be the largest convoy of motorcyclists ever and representatives from the Guinness Book of Records turned up to count the bikes as they journeyed from New Brighton to Clatterbridge Hospital.

Around 15,000 eggs and £10,000 was collected for Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, the children's unit at Arrowe Park, the North West Air Ambulance and Wirral Hospital's SAM Appeal.

A participating biker said: "It was a fantastic day and the sun shone for us."

Geoff Mercer, one of the organisers of the event, says he is now waiting to hear if the charity event has officially hit the record books.

He told the Globe: "It all ran very well, there were no incidents and the public enjoyed themselves. I'd like to say a big thank you to Merseyside Police for giving the event the go-ahead and the hospital for their support."
