A LOCAL cricket club is appealing for former players. firends and opponents to step forward to help it celebrate its centenary later this spring.

It was on May 18, 1901, that the first recorded game of cricket was played at Old Greasby Road, Upton, and Upton Cricket Club plans to commemorate the landmark with a series of events.

The weekend of May 31 to June 2 will see a specially erected marquee on the cricket ground for a Sportsman's Dinner featuring former Engalnd fast bowler Fred Trueman and rugby star Gareth Chilcott followed by a reunion day when an Upton team will be playing a Merseyside Cricket Competition representative eleven in a commemorative match.

There will also be an informal hotpot supper and a publication charting the history of the club with statistics, events, characters and stories from the past will also be available.

The celebrations will end on June 2 with a Centernary Summer Ball - details of all the events are from Graeme McGowan on 678-6022.

A BUDDING George Formby is needed for an annual charity show in aid of the Deaf Children's Society. Organiser Iris McNair wants a ukelele playing vocalist for Ellesmere Port Civic Hall on Tuesday, April 24. Call 355-2895.
