I TAKE issue with the letter headlined 'Education not equal to all' (Readers' Mail, July 17). The present government has done more than any other to open up further and university education to a broader cross section of the population.
The same government has, quite rightly in my opinion, prioritised raising standards across the entire secondary system. It is clear that they are succeeding in doing this.
Our All Ability Schools are being supported as never before and, in addition to offering high quality all round education, are being encouraged to specialise in areas such as technology and the arts. In addition, support for local grammar schools comes unfailingly from the government and from Wirral MPs.
Many of our secondary schools, both grammar and all ability, are benefiting right now from PFI building programmes that will see an improvement to the fabric of their buildings, the like of which has not been seen for many a long year.
