FURTHER to the article regarding baby Obediah Blu (Globe, September 22), I felt it necessary to write to you to advise of our similar circumstance.

Our son Joseph was born on August 11, 2004 at Arrowe Park Hospital. He, too, had difficulty feeding and vomited at every feed. His symptoms were observed and analysed and after a few days he was transferred to the Neo-Natal ward at Alder Hey Hospital to receive specialist treatment.

He was soon diagnosed with Hirschbrung's Disease and at two weeks' old underwent a five hour long operation. Fortunately, his condition is not severe and he is now making good progress at home. We are hopeful he will not require further treatment as he grows older.

It is with special thanks to all of the staff concerned at both Arrowe Park and Alder Hey that not only was his condition diagnosed so soon but also he received incredible care and attention. We are in debt to them for the support and reassurance we received. Not only did they display professional skill and expertise, but also sensitivity and genuine concern for our son.

The work and dedication these people do should be recognised and appreciated more often. We regularly hear about complaints against the NHS, but we have nothing but admiration for them.

We would also like to mention Ronald McDonald House, which is situated in the grounds of Alder Hey and provides accommodation and facilities to families who have children at the hospital. It is reliant upon charitable donations for funding and makes no charge for the incredible services provided to parents. We were fortunate to be offered accommodation during Joseph's time at the hospital.

It makes an incredible difference to be able to be near your child when they are sick and to be there with them any time of the day or night.

Roger and Tracey Salkeld,
