Merit finals day looms

WALLASEY and Wirral play their Merit finals on Saturday having played their qualifying rounds throughout the week.

Wallasey start their competition at 6pm on Marine Park, while Bebington are using the Lever Club.

The Wirral contingent returned from the Isle of Man with some success.

Brian Lawrence won the Last Chance Flyer, Matt Gilmore was beaten in the final of the Men's Doubles, while Pat Crowther and Jon Ellis reached the last eight of the ladies' and men's main competition. Pat lost 21-20 to local bowler Ann Maddrell, while John lost 21-18 to Andy Cairns.

There was a disappointing day for Wirral's three county sides, who all lost their matches in the British Parks County Championship.

Wirral went down 21-10 to holders East Midlands. James Whalley celebrated his 20th birthday in fine style, winning 21-6 in the 7-5 victory at Lever Club. The away side came away from the tricky Stretton Number One green with only one winner, Mick Andrews winning 21-18.

Wirral Juniors lost 21-6 to North Staffordshire juniors. Holly Edwards was in excellent form at Pensby, winning 21-10.

Wallasey suffered an opening defeat in their return to the 'Parks' when division favourites, North Staffordshire, inflicted a 24-7 defeat on them.

Wallasey, who lost home and away, will be looking to get some points on the table when they meet Warwickshire in July.

Richard Finch won the Wirral Junior Merit with a 21-16 victory over Tom Lownes. With the scores level at 16 across, Finch pulled away to run out to game.

A large crowd was kept entertained with some excellent bowling, with thanks recorded to Pensby Bowling Club, the referees and those who supported the event.
