STUDENTS from Park High School in Birkenhead had a lesson on healthy eating when they took part in an event based on the television show 'Ready, Steady, Cook'.

Organised by the school's catering company Chartwells, the event saw teams, each consisting of two Year 10 students, ably assisted by a Food Technology teacher, race against the clock to prepare the most healthy and nutritious dish that they could with the limited ingredients provided.

As in the television series, the audience voted for the winning team and the 'Red Tomatoes' were declared winners having produced what was considered to be the most tasty and healthy meal.

The winning dish was pan-fried chicken in a tomato sauce served on a bed of pasta with wilted vegetables.

Mrs Inman, head of food technology at Park High School said, "Food Technology is very popular with our students who are always very imaginative and creative in the dishes that they prepare.

"The national focus on healthy eating is always at the forefront of our teaching and our students are achieving outstanding success in their understanding of this, as demonstrated today.

"We are also lucky enough to have excellent food technology facilities and our school canteen always impresses our students and visitors alike".

Alex Branch, Year 10 student, who was one of the two students in the winning team said: "Today was an amazing experience. Cooking in front of all my year group really put me under pressure, as you would be on the ‘Ready, Steady Cook’ TV show.

"I'm hoping to go into a career in catering and I learnt so many new things today about healthy eating and cooking options.

"It was great to take part, but winning was awesome! Thank you to Chartwells for arranging this brilliant event."
