THIEVES broke into the volunteer-run "Everyone Cafe" at Central Park, Wallasey, over the weekend and stole a digital camera with an irreplaceable memory card.

They smashed up the building and took valuables in an attempt to find cash – although none is held on the premises.

The café is run by volunteers from Riverside Day Care Centre, Wallasey, who make and prepare refreshments for visitors in return for a nominal donation.

The volunteers are supported by council staff from Wirral Adult Social Services.

Support worker Di Boyd said: "This is an appalling way to behave. Our volunteers work hard to do their best for the local community and visitors to the park – and these people are trying to do their best to destroy that.

"We don’t have any money here – it's not a big business. The volunteers – many of whom have learning disabilities - are just doing their best to help others and learn new skills. We are all upset that something like this has happened.

"We are appealing to them to do the decent thing and return the things they stole, in particular the digital camera and memory card which has a record of all the hard work and accomplishments the group have achieved over the past four years.

"Those memories are irreplaceable," she added.
