THIS year's Light Up A Life for St John's Hospice appeal has so far had a heartwarming response from Globe readers, say organisers.

Fundraisers at the Clatterbridge-based charity have received hundreds of sponsorship coupons for the light switch-on, in memory of loved ones, which will take place in the hospice grounds on Sunday December 6.

This year’s appeal was launched in the Globe three weeks ago.

There is still plenty of time for time for readers to be part of what is always a deeply moving occasion by sponsoring one of the thousands of lights that will be switched on by a member of hospice staff during the traditional open-air ceremony, which starts at 5.30pm.

The campaign raised £100,000 for the hospice last year, and the Globe has supported the event since its inception in 1996.

To be part of this year's event, just complete and return the form that will appear in the paper every week until the end of November.

All proceeds go to the hospice, which needs to raise more than £2.5million for patient care and running costs next year.

Helen Squires, hospice fundraising manager, said: "Thanks to the Globe, we've already had some really heartwarming messages of support for the appeal from the senders of coupons this year.

"I would like to thank everyone who has pledged their support so far this year.

"There’s still time to send your form in, so please help us to by doing your bit to help us raise more money this year.”

Shining from trees in the hospice garden, the lights have become a symbol of hope and celebration for all who pass, or have reason to visit, the purpose-built hospice, which nestles by Clatterbridge Hospital near the M53.

Once switched on, the lights will illuminate the hospice garden and surrounding area until Twelfth Night (January 6).

Everyone sponsoring a light will have the name of their loved one or friend entered in a Book of Honour which will be on display in the hospice chapel.
