After falling off my chair with laughter at such outrageous comments made by K McEntee in last week’s Globe about Rottweilers being “killing machines on four legs,” I thought I had better write in and inform this very misguided person about the breed.

Firstly, they were not bred as attack dogs, they were bred as cattle dogs used to control others animals not kill them, they were also occasionally harnessed to carts to deliver goods of tradesmen and later used along with German Shepherds as German Police dogs. No two Rottweilers are identical in character, as with humans. They are very good natured, intelligent, protective dogs. I have a six-month-old Rottweiler who is the most placid, laid-back dog you could come across.

He too is my “handsome boy”

It’s a shame that these dogs have been given such a bad name by poor handling and bad breeding. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner. My previous dog, a German Shepherd was constantly being set on by smaller dogs and on a couple of occasions a golden retriever – all for no reason.

But I guess that this behaviour was okay because they weren’t labelled “killer dogs.”
