THOUSANDS of people across Wirral will pay silent tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country on Sunday.

Among those attending Royal British Legion Remembrance services on Sunday will be the Mayor, Cllr Andrew Hodson, who will join other local leaders at the Cenotaph in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead. The ceremony starts at 10.55am.

Prior to the service military and other organisations will gather at the south side of Hamilton Square before marching along Hamilton Street to the Cenotaph.

There will then be a service of remembrance with a two minute silence at 11am, marked by the firing of a ceremonial cannon.

There will then be a parade on Hamilton Street and along the north side of Hamilton Square, which will be accompanied by the St John Plessington Catholic College Band.

The Mayor said: "It is a great honour to lead the people of Wirral in remembering those who took part in the two world wars and in other conflicts since then.

"My thoughts will especially be with the family and friends of the local servicemen lost in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The service will also allow us all to show our gratitude to those who are still on active service to enable future generations to live in peace and freedom."
