EIGHTIES favourites Kajagoogoo are on their way to Wirral.

Limahl, Nick Beggs, Jez Strode, Stuart Neale and Steve Askew made the soundtrack of the early 1980s with hits like Too Shy, Ooh To Be Ah, Big Apple and Lion's Mouth.

They were reunited last year after a 27-year break and are at Pacific Road Arts Centre in Woodside with a greatest hits show on Saturday, May 23.

The band was founded in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, in 1979 as a four-piece and after auditioning for a singer, finally chose Limahl. They signed to EMI in July of 1982 and their first album was produced by Duran Duran’s keyboard player Nick Rhodes.

Debut single Too Shy was released the following January and went to the top of the charts. Follow-up releases Ooh to Be Aah and Hang on Now both made it into the UK top twenty.

Limahl, whose real name is Chris Hamill, went on to score huge chart success with the title track of the soundtrack to children’s fantasy film The Never Ending Story in 1984, a song which will also feature in the show.

The song, which was recorded in Munich and produced by Giorgio Moroder, became a huge success, reaching number one in many European countries.

Limahl said: "The airplay that song received was huge in Europe but, strangely, you don’t hear it that often over here. Time makes records classic and for me it’s a lovely ballad."

Asked what his plans were if the music career had not worked out, he joked: "I was not wise enough to have a plan 'B' when I was 20-years-old, so thank God plan 'A' worked!

"I was raised on a council estate and never went to college. My dad was a miner and my two brothers were destined for the mine, but the idea of following them down the pit was not for me. I had a Saturday job delivering bread, but I was really only interested in playing music."
