MORE than 300 people have now registered for this year’s Wirral Leukaemia Research Bikeathon.

Its organisers hope the event, now in its 11th year and taking place on Sunday, June 14 event, will raise more than £60,000 for research into the disease.

The current number of cyclists signed up is around 350 and there is still plenty of time to add your name to the list.

Starting and finishing in Arrowe Country Park, Upton, the 26-mile route follows a figure of eight through the spectacular Wirral peninsula with two sections each about 13 miles combining public highways and off-road along the scenic Wirral Way.

It is ideal for advanced cyclists and beginners. To date, the event has raised £468,000.

Ernie Macauley, chairman of Wirral Leukaemia research and co-ordinator of the event, told the Globe: "We are upto about 350 people who have registered and have had a lot of enquiries since the Globe’s last article, so things are looking good so far. There’s still plenty of time for people to register."

On the day Wirral Peninsula Jazz Band play and more than 80 marshals will be on hand to cheer the cyclists on and ensure safety along the well-signed route. Free light refreshments will also be provided at feeding points along the way.

Both Raynet and St John’s ambulance will be in attendance and K-Cycles of Eastham, and The Bike Shop, Moreton, will be on hand to help provide any running repairs.

The event runs from 9.30am-11.30am. Further details, photographs, route maps, entry information and other information can be obtained from Ernie on 327 3129 or at ernie_macauley@hotmail.com Registration information is available from wirralbikeathon.org.uk or info@wirralbikeathon.org.uk
