I regularly ride my mountain bike on the main road and recently, while riding along Hoylake parade, I swerved in some sand and was thrown from my bike.
Unfortunately, I fell forward hitting my head on the kerb, which knocked me unconscious and I ended up in Arrowe Park Hospital. Fortunately I was wearing a cycle helmet and although I lost consciousness, I believe without it I would have suffered a severe head injury.
I have just been out today (Sunday) and was dismayed to see how many cyclists including children still ride without cycle helmets.
Cycle helmets are not that expensive now and I would recommend everybody to please wear one, particularly children. It could just save your life or prevent serious injury.
Being a cyclist I could not let this letter pass without commenting on the recent letter to the Globe regarding inconsiderate cyclists.
I’m afraid there are a lot of motorists who drive very close to me when passing me on my bike, yet the Highway Code recommends “a car driver should allow as much space when overtaking a bike as they would when overtaking a car”. It also advises that “cyclists should not ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads”. I think Evelyn Campbell- Smith has a point. I think both cyclist and motorists need to be more considerate to each other.
