WIRRAL'S mods will be revving their scooters towards New Brighton next week when tribute band The Who UK play Quadrophenia at the Floral Pavilion.

Quadrophenia was the sixth studio album by The Who, released as a double album on October 26 1973 and the group's third rock opera, the previous two being the "mini-opera" song "A Quick One, While He's Away" (1966) and the album Tommy (1969).

Set in London and Brighton in 1965, the story follows a young mod named Jimmy and his search for self-worth and importance.

Jimmy likes drugs, beach fights and girls and becomes a fan of the Who after a concert in Brighton, but is disillusioned by his parents' attitude towards him, dead-end jobs and an unsuccessful trip to see a psychiatrist.

In the UK, Quadrophenia reached No. 2, being held off the top spot by David Bowie's Pin Ups. The album reached No. 2 on the US Billboard chart, the highest position of any Who album in that country, being kept from No. 1 by Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Guitarist Pete Townshend now considers Quadrophenia to be the last great album that the Who recorded. In 2011, he said the group "never recorded anything that was so ambitious or audacious again", and implied that it was the last album to feature good playing by Keith Moon.

Quadrophenia was revived for a film version in 1979, directed by Franc Roddam. The film attempted to portray an accurate visual interpretation of Townshend's vision of Jimmy and his surroundings, and included Phil Daniels as Jimmy and Sting as the Ace Face.

The album and the film was a huge influence on late 1970s mod revival led by The Jam, who adopted a stark mod look and mixed the energy of punk with the sound of early 1960s mod bands.

For this current show, The Who UK presents Quadrophenia Live plus all the hits from The Who's Who's Next album.

In the first half, the band will play Quadrophenia in it’s entirety live while in the second half they will play all the hits from the album Who’s Next including Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again with "added film projection and lasers".

The Who UK presents Quadrophenia Live at New Brighton Floral Pavilion on Friday, August 30 at 7.30pm. Tickets: £30 from floralpavilion.com
