A CHARITY football match for men’s mental health will be held at Wirral football club.

Wirral’s JourneyMEN, a charity supporting men’s mental health, closed their doors for good in July this year.

Despite the closure, the group have decided to continue their efforts to fundraise and support local charities through a charity football match.

This year will see the second annual charity football match at Heswall FC following the success of last year’s event where money raised was donated to JourneyMEN.

Member of the group, Robbie Matthews said: “After the phenomenal success of last years’ event, we were determined to build on this but after JourneyMEN’s closure, as a group we decided to select another charity and this year we opted for the Martin Gallier Project, a brilliant charity supporting Suicide Prevention.”

This year’s event will be held in memory of Matthew Ford who sadly passed away following a battle with mental illness, the event will be a mark of respect to Matthew and a show of love and solidarity to his family.

This year’s game, held at Heswall FC for the second year running will take place on Sunday, August 25.

The day will start with a Junior game with Aluserv FC, named from local company Aluserv run by another of the groups organisers Wayne Ford.

The main game will kick off at 3pm with the Galactico’s managed by Robbie facing off against Paul Threlfall’s All Stars Team with the Trophy at stake after the Galactico’s victory last season.

Galactico’s skipper Adam Threlfall said: “The game is a brilliant event and we look forward to filling the ground and showing our support for the new charity who do amazing work, our side are determined to put on a show for the crowd and defend our trophy, I don’t want my Dad getting bragging rights.”

The All Stars Team had the star attraction last season when former Manchester United legend and scorer of the winning goal in the 1990 FA Cup Final, Lee Martin was in their ranks.

The group behind the event have now rebranded as the White Robins and will continue their fundraising and support of local charities.

On the day there will be a range of Raffle prizes and fund raising events.
